Had this saved on my hard drive for awhile now.
If you know who it belongs to give me a heads up.

Paper Street Soap Co.

Writing a desgin brief is a pain. Writing a design brief from the point of view of a fictional company from a movie you really like is much more interesting. But still a pain.
As well as studying Art this year, I'm also undertaking Visual Communication & Design, and part of your 'do this to pass' is that you've got to pretend that a company has approached you to do something for them.

Anyone who's seen (or read) Fight Club will know Paper Street Soap Company.
For those who don't, Tyler Durden makes soap from the fat that's dumped from liposuction clinics and sells it to rich people. I believe the remark about it is something along the lines of:
"We're selling rich ladies their own fat asses back to them."
I'm pretending Paper Street is a proper company that just make fancy soaps, and thus far my teacher seems to not have picked up on it. Shame.

Anyways, in searching for a witty name for their latest collection of soaps, I found the Paper Street Soap Company website, which is full of wonderful in-jokes (hover over those little circles for links). And then I remembered that Last Exit To Nowhere, maker of wonderful movie-nerd shirts, has a PSSC t-shirt.

Available here, which I've been wanting for awhile.

NA NA NA NA NA NA BATCARD!

I am, obviously, the best friend ever. Okay, not really. But to make up for what I lack, I make awesome birthday cards. And yes, I'm rather full of myself at the moment, but mostly I'm just happy that my idea worked.

I'd never used ink before, and I was fairly sure that the whole thing would fall apart the minute I tried to cut out the oval. But it didn't. And now I've got an idea for the artwork I have to do as part of my 'education'. Bonus.

The inside of the card is yellow, and there's an identical bat on the other side, so you can properly see his wings.

Lamp?

I have discovered a great problem in art works with no real use, other than to be looked at.
It has no practical application in real life, AKA it does nothing but get in the way.

Control/Deliverance! (Which I still call it, in my head) has been sitting in the shed for about two weeks now, and last weekend, somebody bumped it and it very slowly fell down. And then it wouldn't go back together again quite the same. The thin metal supports I used to hold it up in the 'making of' stages are back again, making the whole thing a little lot less impressive. I'm considering buying some of those thin, clear plastic rods to support it, because I can't find the centre of balance that I had found, by dumb luck, the first time round. Chances are the plastic rods will end up costing more than the rest of the thing, but what can you do?

Also, there's the problem of finding some practical use for the thing. My dad came over today and said that he'd take it off my hands, and keep it in his empty beach house, if we could find a way to transport it. Which would most likely mean dissembling it and trying to build it again. But he did mention an idea for a proper use for it. Because the main torso is hollow, he suggested making it into a lamp. Ideas abound.

Would require finding a very low watt light, so that it doesn't burn through the plastic, and probably creating some sort of wire cage inside the torso, so that it's strong enough to support it, which would mean cutting it open, but I would have to do that in the long run anyway...

Oh the ideas!

Control

92 x 95 x 159.5 cm
Newspaper, wire, packing tape, Styrofoam.

If I ever attempt something like this again, please somebody shoot me. Originally I thought I'd have 5 weeks to complete this. I didn't. I had 2 weeks, but I probably spent about a week and a day actually working on it.
Then I died.

But anyway, now I've got all these empty tape rolls left over. 8 or 9 of them I think. So I'm gunna take a leaf out of Dave Lowe's book/blog and make me some shackles. After I take a really long nap.

Not Really Finished, But Close

Last picture for tonight.
This is just before it was finished, you can see that the neck hole is still open. I apparently didn't take any photos after I made the neck, so it'll have to wait, I guess.

Title has nothing to do with the photo.

Like Reverse Engineering, But Not.

This Is My Brother, He Is Made Of Tape

This is the tape-copy of my brother I was talking about. Finally captured him and got the hand I was missing. Then I cut off his head and his lower body and hung him from the giant easel in the shed. Good times.

Plus One

I think I should point out that this is life sized, but not accurate.
Humans have 12 pairs of ribs. The first 7 are called the 'True Ribs' because they meet at the front and back. Then there are 3 'False Ribs,' which only meet at the back, while joining onto the rib above in the front. This rib cage has only 1 pair of false ribs. Then there are 'Floating Ribs' which are usually put under the false ribs title. There are 2 pairs of floating ribs at the bottom of the ribcage, attached only at the back. These protect all your nice squishy organs, like kidneys.
My ribcage has no floating ribs.
And no kidneys.

Such is life.

Cages, Minus One.

They don't look like it here, but right now these are a ribcage. More photos as they come off the camera.

Progress: A Work In

I've been making skeletons. Out of newspaper and tape, but today also from wire and Styrofoam. What you see above is about two and a half days work, and I just spent the last hour or so wrapping my brother in tape to make a copy of his body. Then he wanted to go out before I finished so I've got everything except his left hand. Irritating.

Makin' Stuffs

I love making things. I really really do. I can't help it. Luckily I'm impulsive, yet lazy, so I don't have a house full of unfinished craft things. Either I make it or I don't, no forward planning.

These little guys I made about a month ago. Had two days where I had absolutely nothing to do but sit around and watch TV.
I found the back of scraps we use to test to sewing machine on. Decided to liberate a few of the nicer pieces, and made myself an alien. I drew a quick sketch on the racing guide from the paper, and just made it up as I went along. Confusing but fun. Watched a few episodes of NCIS, SVU and other abbreviations, and voila! Then the next day I decided I'd make a vampire. Drew some more sketches, and actually drew a very rough pattern, on the obituries page no less. Really did need a pattern this time, because I wanted to make a fully lined cape for the little biter. He's got a snap closure to keep to shut, with a shiny red bead to disguise the fact that I'd forgotten to sew the closure in before turning the cape inside out. Next time I'm making him on a larger scale, because all those tiny hand-stitches nearly made me blind. Very cute though. Just maybe not worth it in the long run.

Cat & La; World Wide Tour to Parker's Corner

I've just been asked to create a design to put on a t-shirt for the sister of a friend, as a Christmas present. I'm thinking bright and colourful. Slightly whimsical but also very bright and colourful.
Must include a photo of the sister and her friend.
Think FBR merch.
